How Vasantkamal Tours Changed the Way Chennai Travelled to Shirdi: A Journey That Began in 1999
From simple pilgrimage journeys to thoughtfully designed, comfortable and hospitality-led experiences. The story of how Vasantkamal Tours helped redefine the Chennai–Shirdi pilgrimage.
Every Journey Has a Beginning. Ours Began With a Thought.
There was a time when planning a pilgrimage was very different from what it is today.
Google Maps was not part of everyday life. Travellers could not simply open their phones to explore destinations, compare hotels, read reviews or understand the journey ahead. The internet was still evolving, websites were gradually becoming popular, and most travel arrangements depended on personal references, telephone conversations and the experience of the tour operator.
It was during this period, in 1999, that our journey into hospitality began with our home hotel, Srikamal International, Solapur.
Our experience in hospitality gave us an opportunity to understand travellers, their expectations and, most importantly, the things that made a journey comfortable.
One observation particularly stayed with us.
We realised that there were many devotees from Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu who desperately wished to visit Shirdi for Sai Baba’s Darshan. For several families, this was not simply another holiday. It was a deeply emotional and spiritual journey they had been waiting to undertake.
However, the prevailing style of pilgrimage travel often involved considerable compromises.
Understanding What Pilgrims Really Needed
In those days, many pilgrimage packages were designed around keeping costs as low as possible. Travellers were frequently accommodated in dormitories or basic lodging facilities, and journeys were organised using large, non-air-conditioned buses.
While such arrangements served a purpose, they were not necessarily suitable for everyone.
We particularly noticed the difficulties faced by senior citizens, families travelling with elderly parents and devotees who needed timely meals, proper rest and comfortable accommodation.
We began asking ourselves a simple question:
Why should a pilgrimage have to mean compromising on comfort?
Why should somebody who has waited years to visit Sai Baba have to struggle with uncomfortable transportation, uncertain accommodation or inconvenient meal arrangements?
We understood that many families were not necessarily looking for the cheapest possible package. They were looking for value, reassurance, dignity and genuine hospitality.
That understanding became the foundation of our approach.
Our Decision: Fewer Compromises, Better Experiences
Instead of concentrating only on large passenger volumes, we decided to focus on the quality of the experience.
We began introducing a different approach to Chennai–Shirdi pilgrimage tours.
Here is what we consciously changed:
1. Comfortable Transportation
Instead of depending entirely on large buses, we introduced smaller, more comfortable vehicles, including Toyota Innova-class SUVs.
The difference was immediately noticeable, particularly for senior citizens and families who valued a relaxed journey.
2. Proper Hotel Accommodation
We moved away from the conventional dormitory-style approach and introduced comfortable three-star hotel accommodation.
We wanted our guests to have a proper room, a comfortable bed and a place where they could genuinely rest after their journey.
3. Thoughtfully Arranged Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner became an important part of our hospitality planning.
We understood that timely and satisfactory meals were not minor details. They were essential to the overall comfort of a pilgrimage, especially for elderly travellers.
4. VIP Sai Baba Darshan Arrangements
We also began facilitating VIP Darshan arrangements so that our guests could have a more organised Darshan experience, subject to the arrangements and permissions available at the time.
5. Personal Attention Throughout the Journey
Above everything else, we wanted our guests to feel looked after.
Our approach was not simply to transport people from Chennai to Shirdi and bring them back. We wanted to take responsibility for their experience throughout the journey.
We distributed handbills, personally explained our arrangements and patiently helped families understand why our tours were different.
Gradually, people began experiencing the difference themselves.
When Hospitality Became Our Identity
We never believed that making big promises was enough.
We believed that hospitality should speak for itself.
The warmth of our coordinators, the comfort of our vehicles, the quality of our accommodation, the attention given to meals and the personal care extended to every guest gradually helped us establish a distinct identity.
Our guests became our strongest ambassadors.
Interestingly, our approach also attracted the attention of people from within the travel industry. Some individuals visited our arrangements as guests, experienced our hospitality and understood the possibilities of presenting pilgrimage travel differently.
Over time, we noticed that the style of pilgrimage tours was evolving.
We do not wish to name individuals or organisations. We simply take satisfaction in having been part of a change that encouraged greater attention to comfort, accommodation and hospitality in pilgrimage travel.
For us, that was a meaningful achievement.
From Handbills to YouTube and Instagram: Keeping the Legacy Alive
The world has changed dramatically since 1999.
Today, travellers research everything before making a booking. They compare packages, watch videos, read reviews, explore hotel photographs and seek genuine experiences from other travellers.
We may not have been the earliest travel company to embrace social media, but we have understood that modernisation is essential to keeping a legacy alive.
We have therefore begun bringing our journey to the digital world through our dedicated YouTube and Instagram platforms.
We are documenting our tours, showcasing our arrangements, sharing the experiences of our guests and, most importantly, allowing people to see our hospitality rather than merely read about it.
Our guest video testimonials are particularly important to us.
They are not simply promotional videos. They are the voices of people who have travelled with us, experienced our arrangements and chosen to share their memories.
We want a family sitting in Chennai, contemplating a Shirdi pilgrimage, to have the opportunity to understand who we are before they make their decision.
From a Family Pilgrimage to a Lifelong Association
Perhaps the most rewarding part of our journey has been the relationships we have built.
Some of the people who travelled with us years ago were teenagers or young adults when they first visited Shirdi.
Today, those very guests are married, have families of their own and return to us for their children’s holidays, family pilgrimages and even special occasions such as honeymoon tours.
Think about what that means.
A guest who once travelled with us as a young person now entrusts us with the travel experiences of the next generation.
That is not just repeat business.
That is a relationship built over generations.
We have always believed that a tour should not end when the guest returns home. A meaningful journey should create an association that continues for years.
Our guests have become part of the Vasantkamal family, and their trust is something we value deeply.
Modernisation Without Losing Our Original Values
As we look ahead, we recognise that the travel industry will continue to change.
Technology, digital communication, online bookings, social media, changing travel preferences and new expectations will influence how people travel.
We too must evolve.
We must tell our stories, document our experiences, embrace technology, improve our services and make it easier for the next generation of travellers to discover us.
But while the methods may change, our original philosophy must remain the same.
Comfort matters. Timely hospitality matters. Personal attention matters. And the value a guest receives for the money spent matters.
Our objective has never been to make a pilgrimage unnecessarily expensive. It has always been to ensure that the money our guests spend translates into a meaningful, comfortable and well-organised experience.
The Journey Continues: Chennai to Shirdi, With Sai Baba’s Blessings
Today, our Chennai-to-Shirdi tours, particularly our direct flight-based pilgrimage experiences, carry forward the same philosophy with which we began.
We continue to focus on comfortable travel, good accommodation, thoughtfully arranged meals, Darshan assistance and genuine hospitality.
The world around us has changed since 1999. The way people book travel has changed. The way they discover destinations has changed. Even the expectations of a modern pilgrim have changed.
But our commitment to hospitality remains.
We know that there are many more families waiting to visit Shirdi. There are elderly parents whose children wish to fulfil their dream of taking them to Sai Baba. There are young couples beginning their journeys together and families who want to return to a place that holds special meaning in their lives.
We hope to be part of many more such journeys.
Vasantkamal Tours is not just about taking you to Shirdi. It is about making your journey memorable enough that you would want us to be part of your next one.
From our beginnings at Srikamal International, Solapur, in 1999, to the modern travel experiences we are creating today, we remain grateful for every guest, every recommendation, every blessing and every relationship.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
With the blessings of Shirdi Sai Baba and the continued support of our guests, the Vasantkamal Tours family looks forward to many more years of genuine hospitality.
Om Sai Ram.
