Om Sai Ram!

Millions of devotees across India and around the world lovingly chant the name of Shirdi Sai Baba. His name brings comfort, hope, faith and a feeling of divine protection. But have you ever wondered who first called him “Sai”? Why was he known by this name? What does the word “Sai” mean, and where did this remarkable story begin?

The answers take us back to the small village of Shirdi in Maharashtra, where a young fakir arrived more than a century and a half ago and eventually became one of India’s most beloved spiritual figures.

Who First Called Shirdi Sai Baba by the Name “Sai”?

According to the history recorded by the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi, it was Bhagat Mahalsapati, a devotee of Khandoba and the priest of the Khandoba temple in Shirdi, who first addressed the young fakir as “Sai.”

Tradition places this encounter around 1858, when the young fakir arrived in Shirdi with a wedding party associated with Chand Patil’s family.

When Mahalsapati saw him near the Khandoba temple, he spontaneously welcomed him with the words:

“Ya Sai!” — commonly understood in this account as “Welcome, Sai!”

This simple greeting became an important moment in the history of Shirdi. The young fakir came to be known as Sai, and eventually as Sai Baba.

The name that began with a greeting would go on to become a source of faith and devotion for millions of people across the world.

Where Did This Historic Meeting Take Place?

The encounter took place near the Khandoba Temple in Shirdi, in the Ahmednagar region of Maharashtra, now in Ahilyanagar district.

According to the traditional account, the wedding party stopped near a banyan tree in the vicinity of the temple. As the travellers arrived, Mahalsapati saw the young fakir and welcomed him as “Sai.”

The young fakir subsequently stayed in Shirdi. Tradition holds that he spent time beneath a neem tree at the place now known as Gurusthan and later made an abandoned mosque his residence. That mosque became famous as Dwarkamai, one of the most sacred places associated with Sai Baba.

These places continue to draw devotees who wish to understand the life, simplicity and spiritual message of the saint.

What Does the Word “Sai” Mean?

The meaning of “Sai” is an interesting subject because the word has been interpreted in different ways in devotional traditions and historical discussions.

It is commonly understood as an honorific associated with a holy person, saint or spiritual mendicant. In accounts of Sai Baba’s life, the word is connected with the respectful greeting offered by Mahalsapati.

The word “Baba” is widely used across South Asia as an affectionate and respectful form of address for a father, elder or revered spiritual figure.

Together, the name “Sai Baba” is commonly understood as “holy father” or “saintly father.”

For devotees, however, the name carries a meaning that goes far beyond its literal interpretation. It represents faith, compassion, humility, service and the hope that the divine will guide them through life’s difficulties.

It is worth noting that Sai Baba’s birth name, birthplace and early life remain uncertain in the historical record. Scholars distinguish between documented historical information and the many devotional traditions passed down by his followers.

Why Is Shirdi Sai Baba So Revered?

Sai Baba’s spiritual appeal crosses religious and cultural boundaries. During his lifetime, he attracted both Hindu and Muslim followers and encouraged people to live with faith, patience, compassion and generosity.

Two expressions closely associated with his teachings are:

Shraddha — Faith

Faith gives devotees strength during uncertainty and encourages them to remain steady through life’s challenges.

Saburi — Patience

Patience reminds people to accept that life’s journey takes time and that difficulties can be faced with courage and perseverance.

Sai Baba also emphasised helping the poor, feeding the hungry, serving others and treating people with kindness.

He attained Mahasamadhi in Shirdi in 1918. Today, his Samadhi Mandir remains the central destination for devotees travelling to seek his blessings.

For many pilgrims, visiting Shirdi is not merely a holiday. It is an opportunity to pray, reflect and reconnect with their faith.
