Guruvayur is the temple dedicated to lord Krishna and one of the most important temple in Kerala and known as Dwaraka of South India, it is also known as the Vaikunta. There is also a Deepastambha(a tall pillar with lamps)which is as high as 7 meters. Its worth the view when the 13 levels of lamps on it are all alighted Inside the temple there are idols of Ganapati, Ayyappa,Kavil Bhagawati and only hindu devotees are allowed inside the temple. According to the residents in Guruvayur the idol worshipped there is approximately 5000 years old, The idol of Srikrishna stands with four arms, with each hand holding shandkh, Sudarshan chakra , gada, and lotus flower with tulsi leaves. The timings for the pooja are observed very strictly and the Thantri (the main priest) is present in the temple the whole day. The Melsanti (the main priest) enters the temple in the midnight at 2.30am and prepares for the pooja. He will not have even a drop of water till the pooja is over till 12.30 in the afternoon. Every early morning the idol is bathed with sesame oil and then a herbal medicinal powder of a plant called Waka is sprinkled on the idol…the crimson color of the powder adds to the beauty of the idol. There is a dress code for the men and women for entering in to the temple. One has to be clad fully from top to toe with clothes.
