Our much loved and revered God, Sai Baba of Shirdi or Shirdi Sai Baba as we allknow him, was a fakir when he first arrived in Shirdi. It was Mahalsapati who gave him the name Sai which means religious Mendicant or God. He came to Shirdi as a young lad and no one knows about his background or where he came from. He arrived in Shirdi like God descending on that little village to help them and stayed
there till the end. All his life he remained a fakir and believed in eating what he got in bhiksha and wore a white kafni and the two mantras he repeatedly said were “ AllahMalik” and “Sabka Malik Ek.” He propaged the tenets of Shradha which is faith and
Saburi which is patience to all the people and helped solve all their problems.
He lived outside the village in an old mosque which was in a dilpaidated condition
and called it Dwarka Mai. Even today when people visit Shirdi they never forget tovisit Dwarka Mai which is situated on the right of the entrance of the SamadhiMandir. Baba turned the mosque into Dwarkamai and proved that God is one. The first level of Dwarkamai has a portrait of Baba and a big stone on which Baba used to sit. This level has two rooms. One contains the chariot and the second a palkhi. Just in front of the room where the chariot is kept is a small temple. A saffron flag flies over it. The second level of Dwarkamai has a square stool made of stone, which Baba used for taking a bath. The main attraction of this place is the oil painting of Shri Sai Baba sitting in a carved wooden shrine. This level also has the grinding stone and the wooden vessel called Kolamba in which Baba used to keep the
Bhiksha brought from the village.
Dwarka Mai is the place where Sai sat every day and people from far and wide came to meet him with his problems. Initially he used to treat their illness with herbs which he grew near by but later he began lighting the dhuni and treating people with his holi udhi which is even today given as prasad to every person visting the samadhi temple. The udhi is even now considered medicinal and has miraculous healing properties. He also helped people with other personal issues and protected the people of the village like they were his own family. Dwarka Mai was like a temple and
centre of refuge for the people of Shirdi who came there in need of help. Today Shirdi is easily accessible by road from Pune and Mumbai if you take a flight and there are several direct trains to Shirdi as well. Take a package tour to Shirdi and get a complete tour of the temple with a well organised darshan of the Samadhi Mandir and watch the Aarti too.
Sai continues to live in every brick, every wall of the temple and in Shirdi blessing all of us.
