Discover the other side of our country as we zip you from the verdant coastal Chennai to the borders of the golden Thar desert to the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Let’s get to it as the weather turns cool, balmy and perfect to travel across the subcontinent.

Much in the news past two decades as the use of technology saw public figures reach out to the common population as never before, Ahmedabad holds within itself hidden gems of history, religion, industry….the list goes on. Till you decide what it is you are looking for may we take you to visit some mind blowing architectural gems?

This is the first temple, marking the headquarters of the NarNarayan Dev Gadi, of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. Beginning as a small Hari mandir in a bungalow hidden is a fruit orchard, the visitor today steps into a 5 spiredmajestic kaleidoscope of colourful carvings spread over opulent Burma teak wooden arches and columns. The life and belongings of the founder of the sect, Shri Swaminarayan are
encompassed in a white marble layout. Appropriately Swaminaryanji is remembered in the Rang Mahol through a life sized wooden sculpture, acknowledged among the finest in the state.
Women devotees now reside in the erstwhile resident of the chief priest or Acharya or Haveli. The lux interior ornamentation includes lamps, chandeliers, carved wooden ornamentation, mirrors houses the idol of Ghanshyam Maharaj served by the Sankhya Yogi women devotees.
The North haveli supports the Sabha mandap on sixty pillars. Each pillar records, with great artistry, not just mythogical events, but also landmarks of the 1857 struggle for Independence. Featuring the Rani of Jhansi, Tatya Tope as Narasimha these highlights are surrounded by free hand carvings of birds, especially parrots with other flora and fauna. Truly a fascinating spread of art associating with the emotions of the people.

Whether it is your religious beliefs or it is interest in beautiful architectural creations the Sri Sri Radha Govind Dham, better known as the ISKCON Temple, is a must visit in Ahmedabad. As the atmosphere is filled with the chanting of Hare Krishna, square platforms keep count for devotees to step on to
complete r 108 repetitions of the mantra. The structure is replete with inclusions from the Gujarati, Rajasthani and Sompura architectural styles. The Vishnu avatar is represented in multiple depictions on the walls. The three 50 feet high majestic domes tell the stories of Krishna’s life in their murals. Marble floors walk the visitor to the images of several dieties including Lord Hanuman, Lord Narasimha along with Radha-Govinda.

After the walk around there is scope for a breather as one partakes the Prasad meal and later shop for collectibles and souvenirs symbolizing Lord Krishna. MODERA SUN TEMPLE , MEHSANA There is no doubt that our ancestors did it in style. The culture, the traditions and the creativity stands tall in the artifacts and structures they left behind for us to visit and wonder. One such representative is the Modera Sun Temple in Mehsana built by the Chalukya king Bhima I. Today it recalls it’s day of glory during the Modera dance festival in January after Uttarayan.

Built on paved platforms are two of three components of the temple, namely the Garbhagriha or sanctum sanctorum and the Gudhamandapa or Assembly Hall. Guarded by perforated stone screens on the sides and covered by rosette embellished roof one reaches the remains of the shrine proper. Here the walls are are covered with images of the Surya deity, dancers and others. During the solar equinox
the alignment created a pathway for the first rays of the sun to fall on the house deity. The summer solstice is a no shadow event at noon. A single visit would prove to be just a skimming introduction to the perfect geometry of structure glorified by the elements of carved pillars, artistic arches, symbolism beginning right from plinth of the inverted lotus to the wall mouldings.

And if that is not sufficient the Kunda or the water reservoir will take your breath away. Four terraces and recessed steps laid out around the step well in perfect geometry would put to shame any AI created model today. Artisans have added their own personal touch with images from the Vaishnav tradition.

Another gem from the time of the Chalukya King Bhima I is Rani ki Vav or the Queen’s stepwell. A UNESCO World Heritage site the primary deity is Water. With this as the focal point it is designed as an inverted temple. What a glorious idea!

The seven levels of stairs bring together religious, secular and symbolic imagery in its carvings. It even held in its fold a statue of Rani Udayamati who is said to have commissioned the project. There are more than 500 Principal sculptures. The entire universe is represented in the carving to include all types of life forms from gods, humans, flora and fauna. Women are recorded in all forms to represent daily routines
to the erotic symbolism. Textile designs also are recorded as traditional lattice panels. All through this planned layout is the path to a round well at the bottom.

Fun trivia: The new Rs.100 note in Indian currency bears a representation of

The city of Ahmedabad or the old part of the city was declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Home to remarkable temples, intriguing museums and classy markets, with a little bit of colonial history attached to it. The infamous Dandi Salt March, which was a crucial point in
India’s independence struggle, originated from this place.

The city offers a number of sanctuaries, national park and lake rides with beautiful sunsets that was inhabited by Bhil king of Ashaval in 11th Century, Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411 C.E. and later by Shahjahan. The marvelous architecture with breathtaking view serves the tourist places in
